Netflix available in Australia from March 24

Netflix will start streaming on March 24 in Australia. The popular US video service announced a launch date in Australia, ending months of speculation. So what does Netflix provide and how do you get it? If you have a Smart TV or Google Chromecast, Apple TV, Playstation & XBox consoles, BluRay players and devices with WiFi connected to an appropriate modem, or  you'll be able to view a whole host of movies and TV shows as they stream to your device(s). What will the Netflix content quality be like? If you mean quality in terms of image and audio quality rather than 'will I get [...]

Object Of Desire : New Website by JRD

Object Of Desire is a site where you can find not just what's new, but whats stylish and sometimes unusual, uncommon and definitely cool. It's a blog and an e-commerce store. Sophie Taylor’s innate sense of style and space, as well as her knowledge of the technical aspects of website development made this e-commerce website both a joy and a challenge to complete. It’s great to have a client who knows exactly what she wants and won’t accept anything less than perfect. Her attitude towards her business is equally precise and I’m proud to have been able to represent her [...]

Twitter joins Advocacy group to stop harassment of women

Harassment of women online is at an unprecedented level. WAM, the non-profit organisation (Women, Action and the Media) and Twitter have got together to try and tackle this growing problem. They've created this form that makes it easier to report unsavoury behaviour. Some may say that this is just paying lipservice to the masses, but  Twitter representatives have said that the WAM 'authorised reporter' status allows it to 'escalate' the harassment report and allow Twitter to build a more detailed pattern of troll behaviour so that steps may be taken to improve service and protect customers. Threats made online are [...]

Asimov’s laws vs Humanity

The title's misleading, but I'm trying to draw a parallel between what a science-fiction writer with an amazing imagination set out in 1942 when robotics was just a child and the stark reality of artificial intelligence and robotics is today. And what that means to us humans and our future. Asimov's 'Three Laws of Robotics' (often shortened to The Three Laws or Three Laws, also known as Asimov's Laws) are a set of rules devised by the science fiction author Isaac Asimov. The rules were introduced in his 1942 short story "Runaround", although they had been foreshadowed in a few earlier [...]

The Seven Digital Deadly Sins

I wouldn't normally just post a link to someone else's ideas or work, but this collaboration between the National Film Board of Canada and The Guardian is really quite amazing. Apart from having a great interface and user experience, the content is full of wittily factual nuggets and I dare anyone to walk away from the experience without learning something new. If you find that you do suffer from any of the Seven Digital Deadly Sins, turn off your phone, unplug the computer and take yourself out for a walk in the rain. Check out The Seven Digital Deadly Sins.

E-Commerce checklist

Employing E-Commerce: Have something to sell: This doesn't necessarily need to be something you can put in a box, wrap in plastic, or consign with a courier. It can be a download file, like music or software. A financial transaction would be made in order for the buyer to be allowed to download the product. If you've ever bought an app for your smartphone or tablet device, or bought a song off iTunes then you already know about this. It could be a subscription or a  membership, a license or serial number. Many online retailers add value for their existing [...]

Google Car (aka Johnny Cab)

Google Car (aka Johnny Cab) I'm sure everyone remembers Arnold's ride in a Johnny Cab in Total Recall. The directors even then understood that a human being would be unlikely to get into a car without a driver, give it directions and then sit back and relax as the car sped through city traffic without a scratch or dent. That's why Johnny (the mechanical half-man on a stick with a smart mouth) had to be there. I'm not exactly sure that it ended so well for Johnny, but the boffins at Google have taken the idea and put it on [...]

Are you ready to get Loopy?

Are you ready to get Loopy? Melbourne App Designer Michael Tyson (yes, that's his real name) found himself in the spotlight when Jimmy Fallon (The Tonight Show) and Billy Joel did a duet singing 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight'. On it's own, that information would be fairly sensational, as Billy Joel still has an incredible voice. The fact that Jimmy Fallon is no slouch is even more surprising. The fact that they did it together, live, and mixed a multi-track session on an iPad using a $3.99 app called Loopy is the amazing part. It just goes to prove that a [...]
